Dome fittings are manufacturer specific and are not interchangeable between brands, which is the single most useful thing to know before ordering any of them.

• Open domes: Who They Suit and What They Cost You Open domes give maximum venting. They suit good low-frequency hearing with loss concentrated in the high frequencies. The most natural own-voice sound and the least occlusion, but the least usable gain before feedback.
• Tulip domes: Who They Suit and What They Cost You Tulip domes give moderate venting. They suit a middle position when an open dome gives too little gain and a closed dome feels blocked. More retention and more gain than an open dome, with some occlusion returning.
• Closed domes: Who They Suit and What They Cost You Closed domes give minimal venting. They suit loss that extends into the lower frequencies, where low-frequency sound needs to be kept in the ear. More available gain and better low-frequency delivery, at the cost of a blocked feeling and a boomier own voice.

They suit the most amplification a dome fitting can support before a custom earmould is needed. The most gain and the most occlusion. Frequently the point at which a custom mould becomes the better answer.
