Every hearing setup in one list

Quick answer

Three complete setups, from a $321 starter arrangement to a $2,957 full one. Every one of them starts with a hearing evaluation rather than with equipment, because a device chosen for a hearing pattern nobody has measured is the most expensive mistake in this category.

There is one ladder here rather than several, because over the counter hearing gear genuinely is a ladder: each tier keeps the foundation of the one below it and adds to it. Nothing bought at the starter level is wasted when you step up, with one exception noted on each page.

Every list below starts with something that is not on it. A hearing evaluation by an audiologist is what tells you whether over the counter devices apply to you at all, which frequencies are affected, and whether the two ears differ. None of that can be worked out from a symptom, and no device on this page can measure it.

Equipment only, and prices move constantly, so treat these as a snapshot rather than a quote. None of them includes a hearing evaluation, which is the actual first step and is not something bought from a shopping page.

Which tier is yours

Starter. Lowest total cost to something that works. A branded rechargeable device so there is no battery handling, plus the two single-situation fixes, the telephone and the television, that between them cover most of what people actually report.

Everyday. The buy-once tier and the one most people should look at. The difference is the fitting rather than the price: a self-fitting device shapes its output to a hearing pattern instead of raising everything equally, and since the commonest pattern of change affects high frequencies far more than low ones, raising everything equally makes the world louder without making speech much clearer.

Full. The performance ceiling, and most people should not buy it. What the money buys is remote audiology support included with the device rather than better hardware. If you are comfortable running a self-fitting procedure yourself, you will not use it.

The starter hearing setup, $321

6 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, so you can see what a setup is missing rather than only what it costs. Nothing in this list is the first step: a hearing evaluation is what tells you whether any of it applies to you, and that is the one thing here nobody can sell you from a shopping page.

The hearing device

$149

One branded rechargeable over the counter device. Branded matters here more than anywhere: this price band is dominated by unbranded marketplace amplifiers listed as hearing aids, and those are a different class of product entirely.

Audien Atom Air
Rechargeable, in the ear, from a named manufacturer that can be contacted after the sale.

Keeping it working

$43

Moisture and earwax cause most of the faults that make a hearing aid appear to have broken. Both are addressed for well under fifty dollars.

Item Price Buy
Hard shell hearing aid case
The cheapest insurance on this site. Devices get lost on nightstands and in tissues.
$8.99 Check price
Hearing aid cleaning kit, 12 piece
Brush, wax loop, magnet and vent cleaner. The magnet alone earns it back the first time a battery is dropped.
$12.09 Check price
Hal-Hen Super Dri-Aid desiccant jar
No power, nothing to fail, and the desiccant is reactivated in an oven and reused for years.
$21.60 Check price

The telephone and the television

$129

The two situations people report difficulty with most, each solved directly for less than the cost of the hearing aid.

Item Price Buy
Clarity P300 amplified corded phone
A corded amplified handset with an adjustable ringer, from a company that has made these for decades. Keeps working in a power cut.
$55.65 Check price
PROW wireless TV headphones with large buttons
Separates the volume in the ears from the volume in the room, which is the actual argument in most households.

Setup total

$321

6 items across 3 groups. Prices move constantly and this total is a snapshot rather than a quote. It is equipment only: it does not include a hearing evaluation, which is the first line on every one of these lists and is not something bought from a shopping page.

The everyday hearing setup, $872

6 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, so you can see what a setup is missing rather than only what it costs. Nothing in this list is the first step: a hearing evaluation is what tells you whether any of it applies to you, and that is the one thing here nobody can sell you from a shopping page.

The hearing device

$599

A branded self-fitting Bluetooth device from a dedicated over the counter manufacturer. The fitting procedure is the point, not the Bluetooth.

Item Price Buy
ELEHEAR Beyond Pro
Rechargeable behind the ear, with app based adjustment and Bluetooth streaming.
$599.00 Check price

The television

$80

The most reported complaint in hearing care, solved by separating the volume in the ears from the volume in the room.

Item Price Buy

Setup total

$872

6 items across 4 groups. Prices move constantly and this total is a snapshot rather than a quote. It is equipment only: it does not include a hearing evaluation, which is the first line on every one of these lists and is not something bought from a shopping page.

The full hearing setup, $2,957

10 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, so you can see what a setup is missing rather than only what it costs. Nothing in this list is the first step: a hearing evaluation is what tells you whether any of it applies to you, and that is the one thing here nobody can sell you from a shopping page.

The hearing device

$1,995

A receiver in ear device sold as a package with remote audiology support rather than as hardware alone. That inclusion is most of what this tier is buying.

Item Price Buy
Jabra Enhance Select 700
Confirm what level of audiology support is included at checkout, because the configurations differ and that is the part that justifies the price.
$1,995.00 Check price

The television

$219

A streamer matched to this specific device family. Television streamers are brand specific and one bought for the wrong brand is not adjustable to fit.

Item Price Buy
TV Streamer+ for Resound and Jabra
Covers the Jabra Enhance Select 700. Confirm your exact model appears in the compatibility list before ordering.

Care, at the level the device deserves

Item Price Buy
Redux Ultra Dry and Charge

$82

The situations hearing aids cannot cover, because nobody sleeps in them. This is the group most often missing from a setup and the one that matters at three in the morning.

Item Price Buy
Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb alarm clock with bed shaker
A very loud alarm plus a vibrating disc under the mattress. The shaker is the part that works, because the aids are not in at night.
$44.99 Check price
CallToU wireless doorbell with vibration and strobe
Flashes and vibrates as well as chiming, with a stated 1000 foot range.

Setup total

$2,957

10 items across 5 groups. Prices move constantly and this total is a snapshot rather than a quote. It is equipment only: it does not include a hearing evaluation, which is the first line on every one of these lists and is not something bought from a shopping page.

Everything on this page

$4,150

That is the sum of all three setups, which nobody buys. It is here so the tiers can be compared honestly. Pick the one that matches what an evaluation actually found, and skip the parts whose situation does not apply to you.

Common questions

Which setup should I start with?
Start with a hearing evaluation, then the starter setup if over the counter devices turn out to be appropriate. The everyday and full setups add to the same foundation rather than replacing it, so nothing bought at the starter level is wasted when you step up. The one thing worth spending more on immediately is the device itself, since that is where the difference is largest.
Do I need everything on the list?
No, and every setup page has a section saying what to skip. The commonly unnecessary purchases are television headphones for anyone whose hearing aids already stream, an amplified landline phone for anyone who uses a mobile, and an expensive dryer protecting an inexpensive device. Buy the hearing aid and the care items first and add the rest only if the situation applies to you.
Are these totals what I will actually pay?
They are equipment only and they are a snapshot. Prices on every item move constantly, and the totals exclude a hearing evaluation, any professional fitting, and any prescription route. If an evaluation shows severe or profound loss, loss in one ear only, or anything needing medical attention, none of these setups applies and the costs are different entirely.
Why is there no battery line in the starter setup?
Because the device chosen for it is rechargeable, which is the whole reason it was chosen. Handling a zinc-air cell the size of a shirt button every few days is the part people find hardest, and a charger removes it for roughly the same money. Setups built around battery devices would need a battery line; this one does not.
What if an evaluation shows something these setups do not cover?
Then this is not the right list, and that is a genuinely useful outcome rather than a wasted appointment. Severe and profound loss, loss in one ear, conductive causes such as a blockage or middle ear fluid, and anyone under 18 all need a prescription route with a licensed audiologist. Over the counter devices are not a substitute for that and are not labelled for it.
