Which streaming routes work with Android?
There is no single answer to whether hearing aids work with a phone, because there are several unrelated technologies involved and they have different requirements. The table below covers all of them for Android.
Every one of these is a capability of a specific hearing aid model. Whether your device supports any given route is a manufacturer specification for that model, which is why this page describes the protocols rather than making claims about brands.

The option that does not care what phone you own
A telecoil is a small copper coil built into many hearing aids that picks up a magnetic signal rather than a radio one. It predates every Bluetooth protocol by decades, works with any induction loop or neckloop, and is completely independent of your phone, your phone's age and your phone's operating system.
That makes it the most durable connectivity a hearing aid has: it survives a change of phone and a change of hearing aid. The two catches are that not every device has one, and that on many devices which do, it has to be enabled by whoever programmed the aid.
The television is usually a separate problem
Streaming from a phone and streaming from a television are different arrangements even when they end up in the same ears. A television streamer is a transmitter that connects to the set, and manufacturer streamers are brand specific: one bought for the wrong hearing aid brand is not adjustable to fit.
The exception is Auracast, which is a broadcast standard rather than a manufacturer system. An Auracast transmitter works with any Auracast capable receiver, which is why one costs roughly a third of a brand specific streamer. The requirement is that the hearing aids support Auracast, and most devices sold before the standard existed do not.

- No. Direct streaming requires the hearing aid to support a protocol the phone also supports, and older devices support none of them. Where direct streaming is unavailable, an intermediate streamer worn around the neck relays ordinary Bluetooth from the phone to the aids, which works with almost any phone at the cost of an extra device to carry and charge.
- How do I pair hearing aids with Android?
- Pairing route depends on the protocol. ASHA devices generally pair through the accessibility or connected devices settings rather than the ordinary Bluetooth list. If the aids do not appear, check that the handset supports the protocol at all, since support has been uneven between Android manufacturers.
- Will I need a separate streamer?
- Only if your hearing aids do not support a direct protocol your phone also supports. A streamer is an extra device worn around the neck that receives ordinary Bluetooth and relays it to the aids, and it remains the reliable fallback for older hearing aids. It works with practically any phone, at the cost of another thing to charge.
- Is a telecoil still worth having?
- Yes, and arguably more than ever. It is the only connectivity that is independent of your phone, your hearing aid brand and the protocol of the moment, and it works with the induction loops installed in a great many theatres, ticket counters and places of worship. If you are choosing between devices and one has a telecoil, that is a genuine point in its favour.
- Does streaming drain the battery faster?
- Considerably. Regular streaming roughly doubles the current a hearing aid draws compared with amplification alone, because the device is running a radio as well as an amplifier. On a battery device that can more than halve the days between changes, and on a rechargeable one it noticeably shortens the time between charges.
